More than 24 million students nationwide ride a school bus to and from school each day. Getting on and off the bus is the most dangerous part of the bus ride.
Families can help children learn how to safely wait for the bus, move around it, and be a safe passenger. If you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing it.
Use the tips as you talk with your student about the basics of school bus safety.
Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting out of the seat.
Once off the bus, take five giant steps straight away from the side of the bus.
If crossing the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the road to a point at least five giant steps ahead of the bus. Make eye contact with the bus driver and wait for the bus driver to signal before crossing the street. Never stop, turn back or pick up a dropped item while crossing the street.
Never walk behind the bus or bend down near or under the bus.
Ask the driver for help if you drop something near the bus, since the driver may not see a child if he or she bends down to pick something up. A backpack or book bag can help keep loose items together.
